Music

‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.’   Plato

At Hinchley Wood Primary School our music curriculum aims to provide every child with high quality music experiences which engage and inspire. Our goal is to help pupils feel that they are musical and to develop a life-long love of music. We focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that pupils need to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. Our curriculum introduces pupils to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching pupils to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities.

We use the Kapow Primary music scheme which follows the spiral curriculum model where previous skills and knowledge are returned to and built upon.

Pupils will develop the musical skills of singing, playing tuned and un-tuned instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening and responding to music. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to and learn how music can be written down. Through music, our curriculum helps pupils develop transferable skills such as team-work, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and presentation as well as performance skills. At Hinchley Wood Primary School, we believe that music has a positive influence on the wellbeing of our pupils and has an integral role in helping pupils to feel part of a community. It provides opportunities for self-expression, social interaction and helps pupils to develop an awareness of themselves and of others.

We provide opportunities for the pupils to take part in musical activities outside the curriculum, including singing assemblies, instrumental clubs and performing in class assemblies and year group productions.  We are committed to ensuring pupils understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
